International Airport Case History - FOG and Odor Reduction

An International Airport on the west coast of the United States, serving more than 500 scheduled operations and carrying about 50,000 passengers each day, faced the daunting task of managing the discharge in their sewer system. The airport has three large terminals with more than 30 restrooms and 28 restaurants contributing waste.

Keeping drains clean and free of odor in a facility with high volumes of waste was a constant challenge.  Floating grease binds mechanical parts in lift stations, and when wastewater sits in a well, odor becomes an ever-present problem.  To decrease the likelihood that a septic smell would permeate the buildings, Airport plumbers would clean lift stations frequently, some in fewer than 30-day cycles. Cleaning frequency kept maintenance costs higher than necessary and kept plumbers from helping build out infrastructure the Airport needed to deliver on their promise to "make everything first class."

State Field Engineers were invited to the site to assess this unique high-volume system.  After analysis, we recommended PrimeZyme™ to degrade fats, oils and greases and help move solids through the system more quickly.  PrimeZyme not only helped dissipate floating greases but, in turn, contributed to remedy the offensive odor from the wastewater system.  PrimeZyme helped dissolve grease between the drain and the grease interceptor.

The Airport has had no serious grease build up in over two years since starting to use PrimeZyme.  Lift stations continuously work and there is no noticeable odor because of fat, oil or grease build up.  The maintenance cycle for lift stations has changed from 30 days to 90 days.
